Abstract

Syrian photographer Sameer Al-Doumy's photograph of two boys playing on swings in Douma, Eastern Ghouta, Syria, on the first day of a ceasefire in February, 2016, captures a moment of happiness and release amid years of conflict.1 Some 2 months later, a photograph by Karam al-Masri, taken after an attack on the Al-Quds hospital in Aleppo, shows a child crying desperately next to the body of his dead brother, having also lost other family members during the Syrian conflict.1 These powerful images highlight poignant personal moments and the devastating impacts of conflict on individual lives in a protracted conflict that continues in Syria.
