Abstract

In an increasingly complex, technological world, it is widely recognized that scientists play important roles in improving public understanding of science. In K‐12 science education across the United States, a revolution based in national science education standards— the notion that science is “for all Americans,” and that doing science is the best way to learn science—is underway [Lopez and Schultz, 2001]. Some federal research funding sources, such as the NASA Office of Space Science, include language in their announcements of opportunity that ask scientists to undertake education and public outreach activities.
