Abstract

This paper deals with the equilibrium properties of a Toda chain consisting of both hard and soft springs. At intermediate temperatures energy is mainly partitioned to the soft springs due to the superposition of thermal solitons. Energy localization in a nonlinear molecular chain may be relevant to reaction theory.
