Abstract

One of the contributions made by a survey of preclassical sites begun in 2002 in the Leja (southern Syria) by a Syro-French team concerns the EB1a period (mid-4th millennium). Exceptional preservation permitted the mapping of a large part of Sharaya, a village that includes several dozen-apsidal houses. The initial description of this research presented here indicates how important this new information is for an understanding of the size of rural communities in southern Levant at the Chalcolithic / EBI transition.
