Abstract

In this paper, the shaped polar codes scheme for dimmable visible light communication (VLC) is proposed for the first time. A precoder of shaped polar codes is used to realize dimming control by changing the probability of 1s in a codeword, which is equal to the dimming value in on–off keying (OOK) modulation VLC systems. Simulation results show that our shaped polar codes scheme can achieve about 2.5 dB and 2.8 dB higher coding gains compared to the low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes with compensation symbols scheme and the polar codes with compensation symbols scheme, respectively. Furthermore, the proposed scheme can still maintain satisfactory performance at higher information rates.
