Abstract

The electronic structure of a single-domain Au-adsorbed Ge(001) surface is investigated using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The single-domain surface was prepared on a Ge(001) substrate vicinal to the [110] direction. The chain structure on the surface is parallel to the step edges as confirmed by scanning tunneling microscopy. Dispersion of the metallic surface band is stronger in the direction perpendicular to the chain than in the parallel direction, contrary to the intuitive interpretation of the metallic band.
