Abstract
Shape coded modulation is a novel combined modulation and error-control coding technique. The basic algorithm is to map binary information digits onto pre-defined shapes within a given signal constellation, and to make use of these shapes to provide an error-control capability. Simulation results are presented for shape codes within a three dimensional (3D) signal constellation, and compared with shape codes based on 2D and 1D signal constellations. An N-dimensional hypercube is introduced, and related to quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK), and binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation schemes.
