Abstract
AbstractThis paper is concerned with an extension of the two‐surface truss model—hitherto restricted to the analysis of shallow shells under normal loading—to the somewhat more general case of shallow shells under arbitrary loading. We begin with a brief review of the two‐surface truss model. Next, we show that our proposed extension is indeed quite straightforward once certain consequences of the two‐surface exposition of thinshell theory are fully appreciated. We then outline two alternative approaches to the incorporation of tangential surface into the truss model. Finally, we demonstrate the good working of the trussmodel scheme in the present context by means of a numerical example.
