Abstract

In this paper the connection between shadow measurements on a cyclotron beam and the concepts of coherent and incoherent radial betatron oscillation is studied. Conditions for the determination of the amplitude of the coherent oscillation from shadow measurements are discussed, and the influence of a coherent oscillation on the shadowwidth is investigated. Finally the maximal and minimal shadowwidths are calculated for a beam with an elliptical emittance, in the case of zero amplitude of the coherent oscillation.
