Abstract

Operating experience with monitor drill bits shows that one of the factors leading to premature failure is erosion at the points where there are defects in the welded joints and in the seals of the monitor heads. This erosion reduces the monitor effect and accelerates wear of the facing on the roller bits. In order to improve the quality of drill bits, the All-Union Scientific-Research Institute of Petroleum Engineering (VNIIneftemash) has developed the SGD-1 rig. This is used for testing the leakproofness of the welded joints and seals in the monitor heads, as well as reliability of fixing the heads when there is a liquid pressure differential up to 12 MPa. The SGD-1 rig has been made at the prototype machine plant of VNIIneftemash and is intended for use at the Kuibyshevburmash plant. The savings expected through introduction of the rig amount to 200,000 rubles.
