Abstract

The current high incidence of sexually acquired infections in homosexual men is related both to individual sexual practices and prevailing societal attitudes. Homosexual men generally have greater numbers of sexual partners than heterosexual males, and their sexual contacts are often anonymous, making traditional contact tracing difficult. Fear of disclosure and discrimination may discourage these patients from seeking or receiving proper medical attention. Many physicians assume that male patients are heterosexual and fail to obtain the proper history to advise the patient and the specimens necessary to make a diagnosis (6). In recent years, clinics operated by gay health care professionals have been established in several metropolitan areas to provide a sympathetic and supportive environment for disease testing, treatment, and community education (17). Cooperative studies between such clinics and public health agencies have revealed that not only syphilis and gonorrhea, out also other bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections are transmitted by ~exual contact in this population.
