Abstract
ABSTRACTSexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are contagious infections spread through intimate sexual contact. Although sexually transmitted diseases are a threat to a person's health, they are preventable. The 2014 Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported a rise in rates of infections in three major sexually transmitted diseases (CDC “Sexually Transmitted Diseases” 2015). Serious health problems such as pelvic inflammatory disease in women and even death can develop from these diseases. Several different types of medications are available for treating STDs. These diseases are a financial drain on the current health care system. Prevention and education are needed to make a difference in their impact.
