Abstract

1. 1. Plasma calcitonin (CT) levels have been estimated in Japanese quail using the rat bioassay method and found to be influenced by sexual status. 2. 2. Castration in the adult male results in a lowering of plasma CT levels. 3. 3. Female quail exhibit a 3-fold increase in plasma CT levels shortly before maturity, the CT levels falling again as egg laying commences. 4. 4. It is suggested the plasma CT levels in the Japanese quail are influenced by gonadal hormone status.
