Abstract

Gender identity and sexual orientation are more visible topics in social discourse. Youth are especially vocal in gender-expansive trends, as well as in the creation of new terms for identities that go beyond the binary of sexuality (gay, straight, bisexual) and gender (male/female.) Youth are not alone in this crusade, yet they require special support from adult caregivers and educators to develop their gender and sexual orientation identities in a healthy way. This chapter explores the politics, parental views, and curricular standards that influence sex and gender/puberty/health education. The disconnect between student needs and the research/recommendations of professionals in the areas of sexual orientation and gender identity is a curious example of Spectral Educational Trauma.
