Abstract
This entry offers an overview of sexualities in Latin America and the Caribbean from precolonial and colonial times, through the post‐independence and contemporary periods. Heterosexuality is considered, though there is an emphasis on same‐sex and LGBT experiences in the region. Practices and identities are shown to be diverse and often to be expressed differently from those in Euro‐American contexts. Currents in scholarship reveal attention to inequality and discrimination, cultural expression, and political affirmation from past times through the era of neoliberal globalization.
