The rates of alcoholism among the gay/lesbian and bisexual populations has been estimated to be three times that of the general public. The socio-political influences that produce higher rates of alcoholism are reviewed. Specific issues in the treatment of chemically dependent men and women are defined and specific suggestions to address sexual orientation issues in treatment and the recovery process are made.
