Abstract

Introduction: The creation of a stoma can have a negative impact on sexuality and sexual health. A literature review was undertaken to explore what factors impact on sexual health and sexuality of people with a stoma. Methodology: A review of the literature was undertaken using online databases Cinahl, Medline, PsychInfo, Embase and Pubmed. The search was limited to articles on colostomates and ileostomates in the English language that have been peer-reviewed and written in the past 10 years. Results: Stoma creation greatly impacts on a patient's sexuality. The main themes identified were body image, physical factors, relationships with others and information provided by health professionals. Recommendations: Health professionals need to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to confidently discuss sexual health and sexuality with patients to improve their quality of life. Further research is required regarding the situation in the UK, pain and lubrication in women and homosexual relationships.
