Abstract

To assess the impact of mental illness and addiction ( dual diagnosis -DD) on the prevalence and frequency of sexual disorders in men hospitalized in a psychiatric ward. The association between sexual disorders and age, having a partner and taking treatment were also studied. The total of 140 men with diagnosis of schizophrenia, affective disorders, anxiety disorders, addiction, dual diagnosis ( schizophrenia and addiction) were enrolled to the study during hospitalization in psychiatric ward. International Index of Erectile Function-5 and The Sexual questionnaire constructed by A. Kokoszka were used to assess examined parameters. The sexual disorders was recorded in 83.6% participates. Reduction in sexual needs (53.6%) and orgasm delay (40%) were the most common. Erectile dysfunction appeared in 38.6% of responders examined by Kokoszka Questionnaire and 61.4% patients assessed by IIEF-5. Severe erectile dysfunction was more common in single participates in comparison to the patients in relationship (12,4% vs 0, p =0.000) and in anxiety patients ( p=0.028) compared to patients with other disorders. In the group of patients with dual diagnosis sexual dysfunction was observed more frequent then in patients with schizophrenia (p=0.034). Treatment lasting over 5 years was more often associated with sexual dysfunction (p=0.007) . In DD patients lack of orgasm and excessive sexual needs were frequent than in patients with single diagnosis ( p=0.0145; p=0.035) . Sexual disorders are more common in DD patients in comparison to schizophrenic patients. More frequent occurrence of sexual disorders is associated with the lack of partners and with over 5 years psychiatric treatment. There is no conflict of interest for all authors.
