Abstract

The type, number, and distribution of setae on the abdominal sternites of Scolytus multistriatus Marsham differ significantly. Five types of setae are identified. Three are common to both sexes, whereas one setal type is sexually dimorphic. We hypothesize that the dimorphic setae are mechanoreceptors that are important in courtship behavior.
