Abstract

(Can J Anesth/J Can Anesth. 2020;67:532–540) Sexual and gender minorities (SGM) is an umbrella term for groups of individuals who identify themselves as 2-spirit, transgender, homosexual, bisexual, nonbinary, intersex, or queer. SGM communities face unique difficulties in accessing high-quality health care. Members of SGM communities are at high risk of developing substance or alcohol abuse, homelessness, and depression. More specifically, transgender patients are at higher risk of venous thromboembolism due to hormone therapy. It is critical for anesthesiologists to possess the skills necessary to communicate with obstetric patients, especially in the SGM population. This study surveyed the SGM-related educational content in obstetric anesthesia fellowship programs in North America.
