Abstract

Friendship, love, erotic relations, altruism, sexuality, φιλότιμο (pride), sincere relationships, and humor all occupy prominent positions in the value systems of young Greeks. There is both an orientation and hierarchical structure to these factors, especially as they relate to emotional and sexual type. Gender, age, and social background are variables that appear to be independent of these factors. Nevertheless, there are some important differences relating to eros (έρωτας, passionate/romantic love), sexuality and love. An investigation of the frequency with which values of emotional and sexual type are projected through a Greek and an American television series aimed at young viewers reveals that that these values comprise the focal point of the television myths and correlate with the kind of values young viewers adopt.
