Abstract

The present study investigated the mediating role of the number of hookup partners and the moderating role of loneliness in the link between sexting and emotional reactions after a recent hookup. A sample of 544 Chinese college students completed measurements of sexting, emotional reactions, number of hookup partners, and loneliness. The results showed that the number of hookup partners mediated the association between sexting and the corresponding positive and negative emotional response. In addition, the indirect effect of the number of hookup partners was moderated by loneliness, in that this effect was stronger for individuals who reported a high degree of loneliness than for those who were low in loneliness. We discuss these findings in terms of the uses and gratifications theory to inform the development and implementation of approaches regarding sexual well-being among Chinese emerging adults.
