Abstract

Over the last 30 years, Southern Africa has witnessed an explosion of research on sex, sexuality and sexual health. What began with HIV in the 1990s, and related concerns about heterosexual transmission and sexual risk, has now expanded to encompass a wider range of contemporary concerns. Alongside growing interest in diverse genders and sexualities, there has been a burgeoning research on love, affection, intimacy and desire. Notably, the developing research agenda suggests a shift away from an almost exclusive focus on violence and sexual risk, to a concern for justice and ‘thinking sex otherwise’.
