Abstract

Abstract Though the effects of sex role socialization on love in romantic heterosexual relationships have been explored, little is known about the influence of sex role socialization on the expression of love among family members. In the present study, 51 male and 90 female undergraduates reported their feelings and behaviors of love toward a family member as assessed by Swenson's Scale of Feelings and Behaviors of Love and Balswick's Expression of Emotion Scale. Sex role orientation was measured by the Bern Sex Role Inventory. Data were analyzed with separate 2 × 4 (Sex × Sex Role) multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVAs). There was no interaction effect, and sex did not affect the expression of love towards a family member. The sex role effect was significant; androgynous respondents were more aware of love feelings and more expressive of love feelings than were the masculine, feminine, and undifferentiated respondents.
