Abstract

<h3>To the Editor:—</h3> I wish to commend the editorial, "Sex Education in the Schools," and second the recommendation that "the medical profession can render a public service by emphasizing the need for public sex education programs, by supporting and improving existing programs, and by encouraging extension of these programs to all segments of the school population." The recommended guidelines for sex education are essential principles for proper attention to this indispensible preparation of young people for responsible attitudes and behavior. Basic responsibility for teaching about sex does belong in the home. However, the school has a role in adding to the family's efforts, and this may be considerable when the education at home is inadequate. Granted that there will be occasional instances of inappropriate presentation of sex education in the schools, this does not invalidate the necessity and the opportunity for such teaching.
