Abstract

In order to determine the sex-related differences in responses to dietary carbohydrates male and female baboons were administered glucose and fructose iv. To determine whether these differences are due to metabolic or gastrointestinal factors subsequent levels of sugars and triglyceride in the serum were measured. The males were observed to show a faster rate of disappearance of the fructose from the serum than the mature females. The rate in the immature females was more similar to that of the mature males. No such differences were found with glucose. Administration of radioactive fructose showed that the specific activity of the serum triglycerides was higher in the males than in the females. Administration of gestagen hormones to other animals suggested an influence of these hormones on the lipid metabolism. Evidence is not yet considered conclusive.
