Abstract

This chapter describes (1) how the bird song control system has become a model system for the study of the neurobiology of learning and memory; (2) general parallels between bird song learning and human language learning, (3) the most recently-discovered parallel, which is the crucial role of social factors in vocal learning; (4) theories concerning the role of social factors in vocal learning; and (5) the diversity of song learning programs found in the songbirds.
