Abstract

The tufted apple budmoth, Platynota idaeusalis Walker, is a newly important apple pest in south-central Pennsylvania. Six formulations of trans -11-tetradecenyl alcohol, a sex attractant of the male tufted apple bud moth, were compared in a block of infested apple trees. A mixture (1:1) of the attractant and trans -11-tetradecenyl acetate Was the most active formulation. Two types of commercial adhesive-coated insect traps baited with sex attractants were compared for capturing male tufted apple bud moths and red banded leaf roller moths, Argyrotaenia velutinana (Walker). Significantly more male moths were captured in the Pherocon 1 C® trap than in the Sectar® trap.
