Abstract

Abstract The role of gene interactions in adaptive evolution is not well understood despite the frequent use of terms such as ‘co-adapted gene complexes’ and ‘genetic revolutions’ in evolutionary discussion. Although most evolutionary biologists and geneticists would acknowledge Sewall Wright’s principle of the ‘universality of gene interactions,’ there is no consensus regarding their role in evolution. Gene interactions and their statistical characterization as epistasis (the between-locus non-additive component of genetic variance) are not central concepts in current adaptation theory.
