Abstract

Learning point for clinicians When patients presented with malaria-like illness in the areas endemic for Babesia infection, physicians should keep Babesiosis high on their differential list. Co- infection with Borrelia should be considered in patients with atypical presentation or with a poor response to proper therapy. Babesiosis is a tick-borne malaria-like disease caused by intraerythrocytic protozoan Babesia , most commonly B. microti. The presentation is gradual on onset and varies among the species. We report a case of severe symptomatic Babesiosis co-infection with Lyme disease. A 70-year-old male with known history of controlled hypertension, presented to the emergency department with sudden onset of headaches, high fevers, non-bilious vomiting and low urine output for the past 4 days.
