Abstract

Abstract: This chapter is a review of the technique of severe plastic deformation, which converts coarse-grained metals into ultrafine-grained metals possessing a range of enhanced properties useful in modern applications. The chapter first describes the effects of grain size and grain boundaries on the properties of metallic materials and discusses various approaches to grain refinement. It then concentrates on the mechanism and conditions of severe plastic deformation; this is followed by a discussion of various severe plastic deformation processes. Ultrafine-grained metals are attractive materials for a range of modern applications, which are also presented in this chapter.
