Abstract

BACKGROUND: Hyperandrogenism is one of the most common female endocrinopathies. The most common diagnosis women will have is polycystic ovarian syndrome, but there is also a rare possibility of an androgen-secreting tumor in the adrenal glands or ovaries that can cause these symptoms. Standard evaluation for hyperandrogenic conditions includes serologic studies and imaging with pelvic ultrasound to evaluate the ovaries. In cases of severe hyperandrogenism where concern exists for an androgen-secreting tumor, computed tomography (CT) of the adrenal glands and even magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the abdomen and pelvis may be performed to assess the ovaries.
