Abstract

Several unsolved problems in organic sulfur chemistry have been chosen and presented. These are the chemical behavior of elemental sulfur and polysulfides, possible involvement of σ-sulfurane in nucleophilic substitution on the sulfur atom, the semipolar nature of S-O, S-N and S-C bonds in sulfoxides, sulfilimines and sulfonium ylides, the nature of the Pummerer reaction, instability of α-disulfoxides, and the relative ease of ligand exchange, ligand coupling and pseudorotation within σ-sulfurane.
