Abstract

ABSTRACT While still in its emergent phase, pending the development, documentation and research of its linguistic features, Standard Philippine English has become one of the most popular topics in the English language community in the last few years. Several studies and literature have explored the contemporary perspectives, attitudes and features of Standard Philippine English. This article attempts to comprehensively unpack the history and linguistic aspects of Standard Philippine English, and to examine the arguments and grounds for incorporating it into the English curriculum of the Philippines. The discussions shed some light on Filipino speakers of English language, English teachers and English curriculum developers to recognize and consider integrating Standard Philippine English into the English Curriculum from primary to tertiary level. Thus, the discussions hope to contribute to the growing research on Standard Philippine English and trigger more research studies, both qualitative and quantitative.
