Abstract
This year is the 75th anniversary of the formation of the Building Research Establishment (BRE) and a brief history of geotechnical research at BRE is presented. It covers: site investigation and soil properties, field instrumentation and monitoring techniques; field performance; shallow foundations and long term measurement of ground movements. The final section of the paper considers current and future developments. The paper provides a brief review of the subject, not a comprehensive account; the objective has been to highlight some of the major developments that have occurred over the last 75 years and to evaluate their significance.
