Abstract

Seven of the eight regional directors who will head the NHS regional offices in England from 1 April have been appointed. The offices will replace the six existing management outposts and the 14 regional health authorities, which will be abolished in April 1996 (30 October 1993, p 1091). Northern and Yorkshire: Professor Liam Donaldson, currently regional general manager and director of public health, Northern Regional Health Authority (RHA). North West: Mr Robert Tinston, currently chief executive, Mersey RHA. West Midlands: Mr Brian Edwards, currently chief executive, West Midlands RHA. Trent: Mr Keith McLean, currently regional general manager, Yorkshire RHA. Anglia and Oxford: Ms Barbara Stocking, currently chief executive, Oxford RHA. North Thames: Mr Ronald Kerr, currently regional general manager, North West Thames RHA. South Thames: Mr Chris Spry, currently chief executive, South West Thames RHA. The post in the South and West office will be advertised. In the meantime Ms Penny Humphries, development director, Wessex RHA, will act as director. Mr Ken Jarrold, chief executive, Wessex RHA, is the NHS's new human resources director. He was appointed after open competition with candidates from industry and commerce. He will work on the development pay strategy with the Treasury and the NHS with particular responsibility for determining local pay and conditions. Mr Alisdair Liddell, currently regional general manager of East Anglian RHA, has been seconded from the NHS to be director of planning and performance management. He will have a lead role in developing and strengthening strategic planning in the NHS.
