Abstract
Database technology is becoming an essential aspect of planning the provision of a quality service. This paper describes the stages involved in establishing a client database in one large mental handicap agency. The critical features for successful operation of a database are outlined and suggestions made for further applications of data managements systems. The impact of an effective information system on the capacity of clinicians to monitor quality of service is discussed. The relevance of this approach to managing information is emphasised in relation to speech and language therapists, psychologists and other Health Care professionals.
