Abstract
In 2007 the New Zealand government released a Nanoscience and Nanotechnologies Roadmap, it provides a summary of international and national research and places nanotechnology in the context of the government's strategic priorities. The Roadmap sets high level directions for nanotechnology-related research and policy in New Zealand. This paper provides an overview of these directions. Nanotechnology is currently not an area of substantial government investment. The key message in the Roadmap is that New Zealand needs to take a considered approach to nanoscience and nanotechnologies (both at a research and policy level) so that maximum benefit can be derived from investments and the country is well placed to appropriately adapt or adopt nanotechnologies developed elsewhere.
