Abstract

Long before the discoveries of the gnostic texts at Nag Hammadi the significance of Seth in gnostic circles was known. This chapter goes into the subject of Seth in gnostic literature. It deals with the Sethians and Archontici, according to Christian sources. Next, those Nag Hammadi texts in which the name of Seth is mentioned is discussed. The Apocalypse of Adam is undoubtedly one of the most interesting of the texts discovered at Nag Hammadi. The Apocalypse reveals clear affinities with the descriptions of the Sethians given by Pseudo-Tertullian and Epiphanius. The chapter talks about Mandaean sources and various occasional passages in other writings. It is possible to follow, both in Mandaean and Manichaean sources, the development of the significance of Seth as seen from the other gnostic writings. It can be said that almost all the gnostic ideas about Seth can be found in Jewish writings. Keywords: Apocalypse of Adam; Archontici; Epiphanius; gnostic literature; Mandaean source; Manichaean source; Nag Hammadi; Pseudo-Tertullian; Seth
