Abstract

The set-theoretic notion of a system relation is reviewed and structural modelling based on it is shown to be very similar to methods now in existence which are based upon a probabilistic system relation. A relational calculus is proposed which provides a quantitative assessment of the strength of a relation and of the difference between relations; this calculus is isomorphic to Constraint Analysis and information theory. Structure modelling using the set relation is demonstrated. A law of emergent constraints is given as a warning against an attractive reductionist fallacy.
