Abstract
The structures of three new sesquiterpene hydroquinones, rietone ( 1), 8′-acetoxyrietone ( 2) and 8′-desoxyrietone ( 3), from the soft coral Alcyonium fauri were determined spectroscopically. The absolute stereochemistry of the quinone ( 5), derived via mild oxidation of 1, was established as (8′S) from application of the modified Mosher's method. Rietone exhibited moderate activity in the NCl's in-vitro anti-HIV bioassays.
