Abstract

Despite the few attempts to understand the relationship between mental health and need for long-term care (NLTC), its empirical correlation remained obscure. Moreover, although structural equation modeling (SEM) is a useful analytical technique of statistics to test and estimate causal effect relationships using a combination of statistical data and qualitative causal assumptions, as far as the authors known, there is no research explored the causal relationship between SES, mental health and NLTC by using SEM, especially by using the data from a longitudinal study with large-scale participants. The aim of this chapter was (a) to examine the structural relationships between SES, mental health and NLTC of the Japanese elderly, (b) to identify whether gender difference exists on the above relationship.
