Abstract

Automobiles and airplanes may be the preferred modes of travel in the U.S., but passenger rail service, Amtrak, remains an important part of the nation's transportation system. The distribution of Amtrak service, however, as this article details, varies greatly from state to state. These variations in service, the author finds, are largely a function of the efficiency of passenger rail transportation, but political considerations also play a modest role in shaping service distributions.
