Abstract

This paper examines the implications of service brokerage for nurses working in the field of learning disabilities and within the context of the 1990 National Health Service (NHS) Community Care Act. With the acceleration of service developments – due to the planned closures of long stay hospitals – there is a need for innovative funding arrangements which are relevant and timely and these are outlined in this paper. The philosophies underpinning service brokerage are based on the work of Wolfensberger (1972, 1983) and O’Brien (1981). These are shared by nurses in learning disabilities and form the basis from which they work. In order for nurses to be able to adapt to brokerage framework, they need to market their knowledge and skills more effectively.
