Abstract
The Smart Grid faces many challenges in term of communication, control, and management due to its large-scale, heterogeneous, and distributed nature. As the next-generation of power system, Smart Grid has to adopt the Future Internet Architectures (FIA) to benefit from the latest advances in communication. Named Data Networking (NDN) is one of the major FIA and was proposed to support Smart Grid information sharing and enhance the network performance. However, service models for data storage and processing are still to explore. This paper proposes a novel service model for Smart Grid distributed data storage and processing. Based on NDN, the proposed service model abstracts compute and storage resources away from machines (physical or virtual) within the Smart Grid, enabling built-in fault-tolerance and elastic distribution of the data and processing. Moreover, raw and processed measurements are available across the network to avoid duplicate processing of the same data.
