Abstract

Serum uric acid in type 2 diabetics

Highlights

  • Different studies have indicated that hyperuricemia predicts the development of ischemic heart disease in non-diabetic subjects [2,3,4,5,6], this applies to the patients with type 2 diabetes [7]

  • There is positive correlation (r = 0.605, p < 0.005) between serum uric acid (UA) concentration and the duration of diabetes in group II (Fig:1) while there is no significant correlations with age, Body Mass Index (BMI), fasting serum glucose and serum total cholesterol level

  • Measurement of serum UA is important in type 2 diabetics as it predicts the development of ischemic heart disease, stroke and even renal diseases in these patients independent of other risk factors [7,8,9,10,11,12,13,20]

Summary

Introduction

Different studies have indicated that hyperuricemia predicts the development of ischemic heart disease in non-diabetic subjects [2,3,4,5,6], this applies to the patients with type 2 diabetes [7]. Recent studies in humans found that elevated serum UA predicts the development of hyperinsulinemia [16], obesity [17, 18], type 2 diabetes [16, 19], in addition to the development of stroke in middle-aged patients with type 2 diabetes independently of other cardiovascular risk factors [20].
