Abstract
Summary Published reports suggest that jaundice occurring during treatment with isoniazid, streptomycin and PAS, usually follows an allergic reaction to PAS. Evidence of liver disorder without jaundice has also been published. A small number of similar cases in our own practice led to a study of the serum levels of glutamic pyruvic transaminase (S.G.P.T.) before and during treatment of tuberculous patients with these drugs. The results show that whilst raised S.G.P.T. levels may be found in up to 8% of patients before and during triple chemotherapy, the proportion of patients with raised transaminase levels was 40% after allergic reactions to PAS; there was no evidence of any similar rise in the small number of patients with allergic reactions only to streptomycin.
