Abstract

ABSTRACT Three cases of subacute thyroiditis were observed throughout the course of the illness, in which serial measurements of protein-bound iodine (PBI), thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), thyrotropin (TSH) and 24-hr thyroidal 131I uptake (131I uptake) were done. Suppressed TSH and 131I uptake were observed coincident with the elevation of PBI (or T4) and T3 during the acute phase. 131I uptake was hypernormal during the recovery phase, which was proceeded by the augmented secretion of TSH. In one subject, thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) failed to produce TSH and T3 responses during acute phase. The elevations of TSH and T3 were observed with TRH during the recovery phase.
