Abstract

Using commercial radioimmunoassay kits, the following concentrations of T 3 and T 4 in sera from mature Japanese quail were determined. Males ( n = 52); T 3, 1.11 ± 0.08 (SEM) ng/ml; T 4, 12.1 ± 0.94 ng/ml. Females ( n = 13); T 3, 1.19 ± 0.10 ng/ml; T 4, 12.5 ± 2.1 ng/ml. For 20-μg doses of synthetic thyrotropin-releasing hormone, maximum concentrations for T 3 (3.3-fold control) and T 4 (1.6-fold control) occurred 60 min after intramuscular injection. For a 60-min response period, T 3 and T 4 concentrations increased directly as the logarithm of micrograms of thyrotropin-releasing hormone injected for a dose range of 3 to 600 μg of TRH/quail.
