Abstract
Serum osteocalcin (OC), serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and urine hydroxyproline (Hyp) were measured in normal children and patients with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Serum OC, ALP, and urine Hyp values were decreased in DMD patients (p 0.2) and a tendency of correlation was noted between serum ALP and QCT values (Y=0.05X+1.11; r=0.56; 0.05<p<0.1). The most intimate correlation was found between serum OC and QCT values (Y=0.17X−9.52; r=0.82 p<0.05). Serum OC was elevated (p<0.01) on administration of 1α (OH) vitamin D3 but ALP and Hyp showed no remarkable changes. Our studies indicate that serum OC may serve as a specific and useful indicator for the evaluation of immobilization osteoporosis in DMD.
